In my world, I am always researching what Americans (specifically Boomers) need and want. Three design trends I have identified for 2014 are:
Multifunctional furniture:
Millions of people will be spending billions of dollars to either remodel their homes or move, but either way, they are seeking furniture and accessories that will work for their lifestyles (not just the “same old, same old” pieces). In downsizing their spaces, smart folks know to look for good-looking furniture for message centers, as part of laundry/mud rooms or as functional entry pieces that provide more than just a surface for a lamp, mirror, etc.
A more popular example is a bar built into a cabinet. Yes, these have always been available, but now people of all ages from first time nesters to boomers, want more style, size and functionality options as they regroup in each phase of their lives. These are only a few areas that are popular for small home living this year.
Outdoor Furniture
There are more and more great choices for outdoor furniture for those who love their outdoor time with family and friends, or even alone. Trend experts tell us that bringing the outdoors inside through atriums or sunrooms is big this year. People are no longer satisfied with non-functioning exterior, deck or patio spaces that are often never used or are inconvenient to maintain. Innovative pieces are now available that not only hold up in the elements, but are easy to take care of and are “kid-proof.” Not to mention, these pieces are stunning and comfy.
Lighting
Appropriate and space specific lighting will become the norm, rather than the exception as it emphasizes the importance of enhancing the room design and the quality of living in that space. I am always on the lookout for lighting that fits into unusual spaces or for functional, more sophisticated ambient lighting. Lighting should be both beautiful and an essential part of any home.
